Depart from Amboise and Discover Château de Chambord

Upon meeting your guide and settling into our small group vehicle, we'll begin our adventure with a visit to the awe-inspiring Château de Chambord, the first castle on our Loire Valley itinerary. Considered one of the most beautiful chateaux in the region, Chambord is a UNESCO World Heritage site that never fails to mesmerize visitors. After a pleasant drive of approximately one hour, we'll arrive at the breathtaking Château de Chambord.

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Sologne region, this chateau was commissioned by King Francis 1 (François 1er) in the early 16th century as a hunting lodge. Although not intended as a permanent residence, the castle's architecture showcases the grandeur of the Italian Renaissance style, serving as a symbol of power for the young French king and impressing foreign visitors and ambassadors.

The castle's centerpiece is its central keep, adorned with four massive bastion towers at each corner. With over 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases, Chambord is a true architectural marvel. Notably, its famous double helix staircase, believed to be inspired by the genius Leonardo da Vinci, is a testament to the castle's extraordinary craftsmanship.

While King Francis 1 never witnessed the completion of Château de Chambord, it was finished during the reign of King Louis XIV (the Sun King). The maintenance of this grandiose castle proved challenging over the years, passing through various hands before ultimately being acquired by the French State in 1930.

Upon arrival, your guide will lead you on a comprehensive tour of the castle, lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Explore the main rooms, marvel at the iconic double spiral staircase, and ascend to the terraces for a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. After the guided tour, you'll have some free time to further explore Chambord Castle at your leisure. If you selected the Château and Gardens visit during the booking process, don't miss the opportunity to stroll through the picturesque French Gardens of Chambord.

Indulge in Free Time for Lunch (at own expense)

Following the captivating visit to Chambord Castle, you'll have ample time for lunch on your own, with a range of options available at the castle or in the nearby vicinity. Your guide will be delighted to offer recommendations based on your preferences. After a satisfying lunch, we'll continue our journey to the next highlight of the day: Château de Chenonceau.

Explore the Magnificent Château de Chenonceau

After lunch, we'll drive to Chenonceaux, where the remarkable Château de Chenonceau awaits. While the original chateau dates back to the 13th century, it underwent significant transformations and became a property of King Francis I to settle a debt.

One of the most notable owners was Diane de Poitiers, the mistress of Henri II, who added the arched bridge spanning the River Cher and transformed the building. After the king's death, Catherine de Medici took possession of the chateau and expelled Diane de Poitiers.

During Catherine de Medici's ownership, the chateau witnessed lavish renovations and extravagant nighttime parties, including the first-ever fireworks display in France, held in 1560.

Over time, Château de Chenonceau changed hands several times, with one famous owner being Louise Dupin, renowned for hosting a literary salon frequented by eminent figures like Voltaire, Montesquieu, Buffon, and Marivaux. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the celebrated philosopher, even served as Louise Dupin's secretary and tutor to her son.

In more recent history, the castle was acquired in 1913 by the Menier family, renowned chocolatiers, and remains in their possession to this day.

Upon arrival at Chenonceau castle, embark on a comprehensive tour that showcases its outstanding collection of furniture, tapestries, and paintings, including works by renowned artists such as Rubens, Tintoretto, Van Loo, Murillo, Veronese, Poussin, and Van Dyck. Highlights of the castle tour include Diane de Poitiers' bedroom, the Green Study, the Gallery, and the kitchens. After the guided tour, take some time to explore the beautiful gardens at your leisure.
