Chateau de Chenonceau Guided Tour

Often referred to as the "Chateau des Dames," this castle is renowned for its stunning architecture and the prominent women who shaped its history, such as Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici. Admire the breathtaking Renaissance gardens that enhance the beauty of this bridge-like structure, gracefully spanning the Cher River.

Originally dating back to the 13th century, the Chateau de Chenonceau faced destruction and subsequent rebuilding before being acquired by King Francis I as a debt settlement. Later, Diane de Poitiers, mistress of Henri II, made significant transformations to the chateau, including the addition of the iconic arched bridge. After the king's passing, Catherine de Medici claimed ownership and expelled Diane de Poitiers.

During Catherine de Medici's tenure, the chateau underwent lavish renovations and was renowned for hosting extravagant nighttime festivities, including the first-ever fireworks display in France in 1560. Over time, the Chateau de Chenonceau changed hands, with notable figures such as Louise Dupin, known for her literary salon attended by luminaries like Voltaire, Montesquieu, Buffon, and Marivaux. The renowned philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau served as Louise Dupin's secretary and tutored her son.

In more recent history, the castle was acquired in 1913 by the Menier family, esteemed chocolatiers, and remains in their possession to this day.

Upon arrival at Chenonceau castle, our private guided tour begins. Marvel at the impressive collection of furniture, tapestries, and paintings, including works by Rubens, Tintoretto, Van Loo, Murillo, Veronese, Poussin, Van Dyck, and many other celebrated artists. Explore the castle's highlights, such as Diane de Poitiers' bedroom, the Green Study, the Gallery, and the kitchens. After the guided tour, take some time to wander the enchanting gardens, immersed in natural beauty.

Guided Tour of Château de Chambord

Embark on an unforgettable adventure as we head to Château de Chambord, our first destination of the day. This splendid Loire Valley castle is renowned for its breathtaking beauty. Within just a short one-hour drive, we'll arrive at the magnificent Château de Chambord, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1981.

Nestled in the heart of France's Sologne region, King Francis 1 (François 1er) commissioned the construction of Château de Chambord in the early 16th century as a hunting lodge. Although not intended as a permanent residence, this architectural masterpiece exemplifies the Italian Renaissance style, reflecting the king's ambition to impress foreign dignitaries and showcase his power.

The castle features a central keep surrounded by four majestic bastion towers. With over 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases, Chambord is an architectural marvel. Its iconic double helix staircase, believed to be inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, serves as the castle's central axis. Ascending three floors without ever meeting, the two helices are illuminated from above by a lighthouse-like structure at the highest point of the chateau. Don't miss the opportunity to marvel at the intricate masonry work and the ornate roof, which distinguishes Château de Chambord.

Although King Francis 1 never saw the completion of the castle, it was finished during the reign of King Louis XIV (the Sun King). Due to its sheer size, maintaining Château de Chambord has been a challenge over the years. After passing through various owners, it was eventually acquired by the French State in 1930, becoming its sole owner.

Upon arrival, follow your knowledgeable guide on a comprehensive tour of the castle. Explore the main rooms, marvel at the famous double spiral staircase, and ascend to the terraces, where you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding area. The guided tour lasts approximately 1.5 hours, providing ample time to immerse yourself in the rich history and architectural grandeur of Chambord Castle.

After the guided tour, enjoy some free time to further explore the captivating Château de Chambord at your own pace. Our journey will conclude with a return to Tours, where we bid you farewell, marking the end of our exceptional services.

Indulge in Wine Tasting in the Chinon Wine Region

After a short scenic drive, we'll arrive at the Chinon wine-producing region. Known for its exceptional red wines crafted from Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, as well as its exquisite white wines made from Chenin Blanc, this region boasts around 200 esteemed wine producers who collectively produce approximately 12 million bottles per year. The light, sandy-gravel soils near the Vienne River impart a rounded and supple character to the Chinon wines, making them easy to drink. Meanwhile, wines grown in the denser soil of the limestone slopes exhibit a fuller body, robustness, and longer aging potential.

Upon arrival, we'll take you to one of our carefully selected wineries in the region. Here, you'll have the opportunity to savor a wide range of local wines through a guided tasting session. Our wine tours include insightful commentary on the wines, as well as explanations about the appellation and terroir associated with the wine region.

Discover the Bourgueil / Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil Wine Region

Following lunch, we'll venture to the renowned Bourgueil / Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil Wine Region in the Loire Valley. With winemaking traditions dating back to the 10th century, this area gained prominence for its outstanding wines in the 17th century. The vineyards of Bourgueil are situated on sandy gravel known as "graviers" and clay-limestone soil called "Tuffeau," which was also used in the construction of houses and castles in the region. These historic quarries now serve as cellars for aging wines.

Bourgueil / Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil wines are predominantly red and crafted from the Cabernet Franc grape variety. Wines grown on sandy gravel soils exhibit fruitiness, delicacy, and lightness, ideal for early consumption. On the other hand, wines from vines planted in clay-limestone soils offer complexity, higher tannins, and the potential for aging, especially in exceptional vintages.

Experience Wine Tasting Sessions in Two Wineries

During the afternoon, we'll visit and indulge in wine tastings at two local wineries within the Bourgueil / Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil appellation. After a brief introduction to the winery's history, you may have the opportunity to explore the vineyards and witness the current state of the vines, depending on the winery visited. Some wineries may also offer tours of their technical installations and aging cellars. Following the informative tour, you'll participate in a guided tasting session, sampling a variety of wines produced on-site. While red wines dominate the region, some wineries also offer tastings of rosé, white, and sparkling wines.
