Bordeaux Beyond the Bottle: Private Gourmet Food & Wine Tour

Enjoy a Private Gourmet Tour in Bordeaux with an expert local guide. Visit Bordeaux on a walking tour and stop to taste the most emblematic local delicacies such as Cannelé, Dunes Blanches, Cured Meats, and many more.

Discover our Bordeaux gourmet food walking tour

Follow one of our expert guides through the streets of Historical Bordeaux and taste some of the most delicious food and wines of the region. Departing from a centrally located meeting point, this private tour will begin by a short walk in the city center that will take you along the famous Place des Quinconces and through the narrow streets of the heart of the city.

The Cannelé of Bordeaux

Your food tour in Bordeaux includes a number of stops that will delight your taste buds. On your way to your first stop, you will have the pleasure to taste a cannelé, Bordeaux's most famous cake. In the 16th century, to filter the wine, egg white was used by the winemakers to obtain a wine with less particles.

The egg yolk, not needed for this process, was given to the nuns of the Annonciades Convent who would also obtain wheat and rhum on the docks of Bordeaux. With these ingrediants, they created cakes that were given to the poor or needy. The cakes did not look like the one's you will taste on your food tour. It wasn't until the early 1900's that the cake will take this typical shape that we know today, completely redesigned by a Bordeaux Pastry Chef.

Basque Country Cured Meats & Delicacies

Your goumet tour will include Basque specialties. Located just a mear 2 hours south of Bordeaux, the Basque country is home to many delicacies including its cured meats. In this local shop popular with locals you will taste products that respect tradition, seasons, nature one of the most famous being the Kintoa PDO ham & meats. The ham is cured for 16 to 18 months and produces a dark red marbled meat.

The Basque country is also famous for being one of the most important chocolate destination in France. The first traces of hot chocolate served in France is mentioned in the town of Bayonne where the cocoa first arrived in the 17th century. Since 1895, the Pariès Family excels in Chocolate making and is today recognized as one of the most famous chocolate makers of France. The most famous products of this Chocolate Maker include the Mouchou and the Kanouga which you can taste on your tour today depending on the itinerary you plan with your guide.

The Dunes Blanches

Taste one of the most delicious deserts that can be found in Bordeaux, the Dunes Blanches. Dune Blanche is a delicious little crispy chou bun topped with a cream as light as a cloud. This lovingly garnished chou bun is a concentrate of happiness. Legend has it that the son of a famous baker of Cap Ferret, coming home after a long night out, mixes a Chouquette (sugar puffs) with a very light cream, secret of the family. The Dunes Blanches were born!

Food & Wine Pairing

It would be impossible to follow a Bordeaux Gourmet Tour without including local Bordeaux wines and what pairs the best with it: cheese or chocolate. Depending on the time of the day and your desires, the tasting will be salty or sweet. The goal here, is to have you experience simple pairings that you will be able to reproduce at home. On this stop it will be all about food & wine pairing !

Bordeaux Wine Regions Visited:

  1. The Médoc & Margaux Appellation:
Spanning from the Atlantic Ocean to the left bank of the Gironde estuary, the Médoc wine region includes the four famous communes of Saint Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint Julien, and Margaux. With its 10,600 hectares of vineyards and an annual production of approximately 50 million liters, this region is a haven for wine lovers. It primarily produces red wines, utilizing grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Some white wines are also produced under the generic Bordeaux AOC classification.

  2. Saint Emilion:
Situated on a hill along the Dordogne Valley, the medieval village of Saint Emilion holds the distinction of being the first wine region to achieve World Heritage status in 1999. Its history dates back to the 2nd century when Romans introduced grape cultivation. The village derives its name from Emilian, a monk who sought refuge in one of the natural caves and later became a central figure in the area's religious and winemaking development. Saint Emilion wines, known for their robust flavors and rich earthy notes, are predominantly made from Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes.

  3. Graves:
Bordering the Garonne river, the Graves Bordeaux wine region encompasses sub-regions like Pessac Léognan, Sauternes, and Barsac (known for its sweet wines). This region's distinguishing feature is its intensely gravelly soil. While Chateau Haut Brion was included in the 1855 Médoc classification, the Graves appellation itself received its classification in 1953 for red wines and 1959 for white wines. Graves is renowned as the birthplace of claret, and its wines showcase grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle. Prominent wineries in the area include La Mission Haut Brion, Domaine de Chevalier, Château Haut Bailly, and Château Bouscaut, many of which are classified as Crus Classes wines.

Indulge in a remarkable wine tour experience and discover the captivating charm of Bordeaux's three major wine regions: Médoc, Saint Emilion, and Graves. Let our expert guides and comfortable transportation ensure a memorable journey through the world of Bordeaux wines.

Bordeaux Escape: Explore Arcachon Bay & Pilat Dune Privately × × × × × × ×
Bordeaux Escape: Explore Arcachon Bay & Pilat Dune Privately

Bordeaux Escape: Explore Arcachon Bay & Pilat Dune Privately

Discover a unique Sea Side Resort on this private day trip from Bordeaux to Arcachon Bay. Climb Dune du Pilat, Europe’s Largest Sand Dune. Reach Cap Ferret by boat or take an optional Pinasse du Bassin Boat ride. Taste Arcachon Oysters.

Drive from Bordeaux to Arcachon

Arcachon is a popular bathing location on the Atlantic coast 55 kilometers (34 miles) southwest of Bordeaux. It has fine sandy beaches, a mild climate and the town itself is dotted with belle époque architecture making it a popular destination far from the bustle of Bordeaux.

The town of Arcachon is only 150 years old. Not long before May 2nd 1857, when Emperor Napoleon III signed its official “birth certificate”, it was just a pine forest, oaks and strawberry trees (arbutus), with no road links, and home – mostly when the weather was expected to be warm, and more in wood huts than in real houses – to fewer than 400 people, mostly fishermen and peasants. In earlier years, when some hygienists began to recommend sea bathing, three sea establishments were laid out by some entrepreneurs especially for the Bordeaux bourgeoisie.

At its southern entrance from the Atlantic Ocean, Arcachon Bay is crowned by Europe’s largest sand dune, the Dune de Pilat (or du Pyla), nearly 3 kilometres long, 500 metres wide, reaching 107 metres in height, and moving inland at a rate of 5 metres a year.

Reach the Bay of Arcachon

Today depart from Bordeaux and head towards this land locked sea known as “The Bay of Arcachon”. Upon arrival, discover the oyster sheds that are laid in rows one next to each other and that belong to the local oyster farmers that make this destination so well known to all French oyster aficionados. Here you will have the opportunity to taste fresh Arguin Banc accompanied with fresh baguette, lightly salted butter and a glass of white wine of course.

For lunch, your guide will certainly suggest one of the many high quality sea food restaurants located along the shore. There are also fantastic restaurants facing the sand beaches that can be booked by your guide in the morning and that really bring out the natural beauty of Arcachon Bay.

In the afternoon a number of options are possible:

Option 1 - Head to Pilat and climb the dune.

After a short drive from Arcachon town, reach the highest sand dune of Europe located in the small town of Pilat sur Mer. During the summer season, a staircase is put in place so that it is easier to climb the Dune without damaging the area. This means you will have to make some effort to reach the top as there are 170 stairs to climb. Once at the top, discover the natural beauty of the landscape and admire one of the most stunning views of the Bay and the pine forest in the back.

Option 2 - A traditional Private Pinasse Boat Tour on the Bay

Book an optional unique boat ride on board a local “Pinasse”, the traditional boats of the Bay of Arcachon. All built out of wood, mention of the boats date back to the 1500’s at a time when they were used only for fishing. This pleasant ride will have you see the numerous oyster farms and admire ‘Birds Island’ with its “Tchanqués” huts built on wooden piles. You can also include some oyster tasting, picnic & wine to enhance your experience.

Any of these options can be chosen during the booking process. Tour returns to the Bordeaux area at the end of our services.

Journey to Lourdes: Private Day Tour from Bordeaux

A One Day Historic Tour To A Most Important City. Our unique day trip from Bordeaux to Lourdes includes the visit of the sanctuary as well as the most important sites linked to Bernadette Soubirous. Free time for personal discovery.

Follow the Footsteps of a Saint Through This Prized Pilgrimage Town

Meet your English speaking local guide

Depart for the town of Lourdes on this full day trip from Bordeaux. In the morning we will come and pick you up at your centrally located hotel in Bordeaux. Meet your English speaking local guide who will go over the itinerary and program of the day. Then it will be time to board your premium air conditioned minivan and depart for Lourdes.

Arrive in the town of Lourdes

Following the reports that Our Lady of Lourdes had appeared to Bernadette Soubirous on a total of eighteen occasions in 1858, Lourdes has developed into a major place of Roman Catholic pilgrimage and of miraculous healing. The 150th Jubilee of the first marian apparition took place on 11 February 2008 with an outdoor mass attended by more than ten thousand pilgrims.

Today, around six million people visit Lourdes each year. Due to the consistent stream of pilgrims and tourists, the sanctuary of our lady of Lourdes has become the second most important center of tourism in France, following Paris. It is now the third most important international Catholic pilgrimage and religious site.

Visit the Sanctuary

Upon arrival, your private tour will begin with the visit of the Sanctuaries of Lourdes. The ensemble is the largest pilgrimage site of the town. Here, all the major churches are located as well as the grotto where the apparitions of the Virgin Mary took place. Visits include the Crypt, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Basilica of the Rosary and the impressive underground Basilica Saint Pius X.

Stop at the Grotto

Walk towards the Grotto of the apparitions and enter beneath the rock. See the spring and the famous statue of Our Lady of Lourdes, an unforgettable experience. The Grotto is the site of the extraordinary events which took place in 1858. The niche where the statue is placed marks the place where the Virgin Mary most often stood. Iit is like a window that opens onto the kingdom of God.

The Grotto is a place of prayer, hope, peace, respect, unity and silence. When passing through the Grotto or standing in front of it, each person has his or her own personal understanding of what it means. There, it is possible to fill bottles of the water of Lourdes and take time to meditate near the Grotto.

Free time for lunch (at own expense) in Lourdes

After the morning visit, it will be time for lunch. There are numerous opportunities in Lourdes so don't hesitate to ask your guide for suggestions or recommendations.

On the footsteps of Bernadette

Your full day guided tour continues in the afternoon as you follow your guide on the footsteps of Bernadette. During this walking tour in town, visit the house of Bernadette – the Boly Mill and then reach the ‘Cachot’, the small room where the family lived in the most difficult times.

Visit the Boly Mill

Bernadette Soubirous was born in this mill house on the 7th of January of 1844. She lived in the water-mill with her parents for ten years. At that time, it was part of the numerous water-mills located on the edges of the river called “the Lapacca” and flowing into the river Gave de Pau.

Inside you will discover the bedroom where Bernadette was born, the kitchen and the ancient water-mill with its grindstones. After 10 years of a happy life in the Mill, a set of tragic events will force the family to leave the Mill, not able to pay the rent anymore.

Visit the Cachot

By 1857, the Soubirous family fell on hard times and were obliged to move from the Boly Mill to what was a former prison, 'Le Cachot' (the cell). This small 16 square meters room (170 square feet) became the home of the family that was composed of the parents, Bernadette, her sister and her two brothers. It is at this time that the apparitions took place the first of which takes place on February 11, 1858.

After the visit, it will be time to return to Bordeaux and that will be the end of our services. Please note that this tour requires 2 adults minimum to operate.

The baths

It is possible to take part in a bathing experience in Lourdes. “Go and drink in the spring and wash yourself there!” These words of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette during one of the apparitions inspired the creation of the baths near the Grotto in which the pilgrims are immersed. Whether a believer or not, you are all invited to this very profound experience. Enter a bath filled with water from the spring that flows in the Grotto of the apparitions and experience something unique.

If you would like to experience the bathing in Lourdes, please let our team of travel experts know and they will organize your Lourdes travel program accordingly. Please note that opting for the bathing experience in Lourdes requires some organization.

The bathing experience takes place in the early afternoon and ideally you will need to be there early to be certain to participate. On some days, the queue can be quite long. There are separate waiting lines for women and men as well as bathing cubicles.

Add to this the rich historical attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage site and you will see why the half day option makes for such a great tour.

Depart from Bordeaux and reach the Right Bank wine region

Starting in the city of Bordeaux, a short drive in a comfortable air-conditioned minivan brings you out of the city to the picturesque countryside plains and rolling hills of the right bank wine producing area. This is the heart of Bordeaux’s famous wine region, where many vineyards carry the Saint Emilion AOC designation. Each of these local wineries produce vintages with distinct soil features backed by a long winemaking heritage.

Your first major stop on this personalized St Emilion half day trip will be in one of the local estates for a visit and wine tasting at a Grand Cru Chateau. Here, we have scheduled an appointment for you. You will be greeted at the Chateau and will get to tour and taste different vintages in this carefully selected domain.

The wines are a blend of Merlot grapes with deep, bold flavors, along with other local grape varieties, especially Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser degree, Cabernet Sauvignon. A local guide of the winery will reveal all the steps in the wine production process for you, as well as share some historical details about the estate.

Your Ophorus guide will be with you during the visit so don't hesitate to ask any questions. All our driver/guides have great knowledge about wines and they will be happy to share any basic or more technical information concerning French or Bordeaux Wines. Whether you have questions about history, technique, flavors, aromas, food & wine pairings don't hesitate to ask them anything that relates to wine to make this half day a very special one.

Then visit a most charming village

Following your wine tasting session, your private half day trip continues with a guided walking tour of the eponymous village. Stroll through the quaint, cobbled streets of this medieval town, while your tour guide recounts local history, from the days of the 8th century hermit Emilion, to the 19th century mining galleries, which still lie beneath the village.

Important historical sites include the Romanesque cloister and the Monolithic church carved into the limestone cliffs, also known as the underground monuments. Since this is a private tour and our guides have a privileged access to this monument, we can organise a private visit of this attraction on your private tour if you are interested in mixing culture & wine.

It is no coincidence that Saint Emilion has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. After the walk, enjoy some free time to explore on your own in the village. Why not enter one of the many wine cellars to continue your tasting session? Finally, you will head back to Bordeaux where the wine tour concludes after having learned a lot about this famous wine producing area.

A famous monk, a cave and centuries of wine making

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Dordogne Valley, the picturesque rooftops and medieval stone buildings of the beautiful village of Saint Emilion are a delight to the eye. A unique microclimate and Saint Emilion fertile soil made the area a haven of wine making.

This tradition goes back to the later centuries of the Roman Empire. The first vineyards were planted here in the second century AD. In the fourth century, the Roman poet Ausonius already mentioned the delicious grapes of Saint Emilion.

Both the Margaux and Haut Medoc produce wonderfully perfumed french wines. Margaux wines have a distinctive fragrant taste, attributed to the high gravel content of the soil in these vineyards. The soil’s excellent drainage means the plants need to root down further to find moisture, making them particularly strong, and bringing up the flavors of the deeper earth. The Haut Medoc appellation is vast with almost 400 different wine producers operating there; the different wineries produce wine that have a wide variety of textures and flavors. If time permits, your guide will try and organise a stop at Chateau Margaux for photo opportunities.

The Médoc Wine Region: World renowned Wines & Wondrous Ocean Views

As well as producing some of the world’s most exquisite wines, the Médoc region also boasts over 60 miles of sandy beaches and is dotted with stunning castles. The Castle Route, running from the vibrant city of Bordeaux to the tip of the Médoc peninsula, is packed with breathtaking vistas and secluded fairytale classified growth Châteaux. Unlike Saint Emilion wines that are mainly composed of Merlot grapes, the Medoc wines are known for their high quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blending. The most famous region includes Margaux, Saint Julien, Pauillac and Saint Estephe.

Gentle hills, sand dunes, deep lagoons and sweeping Atlantic coastal views highlight a trip to another part of the Médoc region. The best way to see different things in the Medoc is to program a full day private tour that we will set up for you and that will allow you to experience the diverse flavors of the region in expert hands.

Flanking the town of Pauillac, some of France’s most acclaimed vineyards cover the eastern side of the Médoc peninsula. This area is home to many fabulous castles including Château Margaux, Château Latour and Château Mouton Rothschild. Another highlight of the region is the Gironde estuary. Formed from the convergence of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers, it is home to a monument that is known as the ‘Versailles’ of lighthouses.

This private full day small group wine tour packs a lot of delights. On this exclusive private tour just for 2 persons of St Emilion organized by Ophorus, you will have several options such as tasting delicious Bordeaux wines and visiting the most important landmarks. Add to this the rich historical attractions of this UNESCO World Heritage site and you see why this full day option makes for such a great tour.

The wines produced here are a blend of Merlot grapes with deep, bold flavors, along with other local grape varieties, especially Cabernet Franc and, to a lesser degree, Cabernet Sauvignon.

Choose one of the following options, best adapted to your wishes

To make this exclusive Saint Emilion wine tour full day trip from Bordeaux unique, we have made it possible for you to choose from a selection of options so that the tour is adapted to your priorities. During the booking process, you will be prompted to choose one of the options below. Just select the one that you prefer and the tour will be automatically adapted to your preferences.

  • OPTION 1 - Visit and Wine tasting in a Grand Cru Chateau combined with a private visit of the underground monuments of Saint Emilion
Visit a Grand Cru Winery: This option is perfect for those of you who wish to combine wine & heritage. In the morning, upon arrival in St Emilion, we will take you to one of our carefully selected partner wineries known for the quality of the wines they produce.
Your Ophorus guide will be with you during the visit so don't hesitate to ask any questions. Whether you have questions about history, technique, flavors, aromas, food & wine pairings don't hesitate to ask them anything that relates to wine to make this full day a very special one. Visit the Chateau, technical installations and cellars and participate in a commented tasting of the Chateau wines.

Private visit of the Underground Monuments: Probably the highlight of Saint Emilion village, is the underground Monolithic Church. The foundation of the church is built directly into the limestone of the rocky site, a rare construction feat. From the history of the founding monk of the village, to the digging of the surprising monolithic church, the visit will enable you to discover 4 monuments : the hermitage of Émilion, the Trinity Chapel and its medieval paintings, the catacombs as well as the underground church. Our certified licensed guides have the authorisation to conduct private tours in this monument so just follow your guide and learn about the history and heritage of Saint Emilion.

  • OPTION 2 - Visit and Wine tasting in 2 Grand Cru Chateau's of Saint Emilion
Visit of 2 Grands Crus wineries: This option is perfect for those that want to experience a more in depth wine tour. We will take you to two very different wineries so that you can understand how techniques and production can vary from one winery to another. On this type of wine tour in Saint Emilion we combine the visit to a very modern winery with that of a more traditional, family owned one. By doing so, it will be possible for you to better comprehend the technical transformations that have taken place over the years and what are the principal differences between traditional and modern winemaking and the repercussions this has on the structure, characteristics and aromas of the wines produced.

Walking tour in the village: This option also includes a walking tour with your guide in the village of Saint Emilion. Discover the most significant landmarks of the village and retrace the history of a famous Monk. Stroll through the quaint, cobbled streets of this medieval town, while your tour guide recounts local history, from the days of the 8th century hermit Emilion, to the 19th century mining galleries, which still lie beneath the village.  It is no coincidence that Saint Emilion has been awarded the UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. After the walk, enjoy some free time to explore on your own in the village.

  • OPTION 3 - Combine Saint Emilion with Pomerol and Visit 3 Wineries

This option is a perfect choice for both novice and wine connoisseurs alike who want to experience 2 very different appellations of the right bank. By choosing this option, you will experience 2 visits and wine tastings in the Saint Emilion appellation (as in option 2) to which we will add 1 visit and wine tasting in the Pomerol appellation.

Pomerol is located right next to the Saint Emilion appellation. The south and west part of the appellation have sandier soils compared to the slightly heavier soils in the east, which include a certain proportion of clay. It is in this eastern section, on the marginally higher land where Pomerol meets Saint-Émilion, that the best wines are produced. Three of the most highly regarded Pomerol producers – Pétrus, Lafleur and Le Pin – are located here. Merlo is the dominant grape in Pomerol and plays a large part in making the wines rich, smooth and approachable at an early age, while also being capable of extended aging. Cabernet Franc is also often present, adding structure and an element of savory spice. These characteristics mean Pomerol wines are much sought after on the international market.

If you decided to choose this option, then your tour will be mainly focused on wine. You will only have a short time for lunch (at own expense) in the village of Saint Emilion. We will include the Visits of 3 wineries during the day with 2 wineries in Saint Emilion wine producing area and 1 visit in the Pomerol appellation. The combination of two different appellations will allow you to dig deeper into the notion of 'terroir' which is the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate. This is where the expertise of our guides will show all its importance as you benefit from their knowledge to better comprehend this essential french notion when it comes to wines.

The Legend of Emilian

The first indications of human settlements in the area date back to the Roman Empire, but the story of Saint Emilion starts in the eighth century AD. At that time, a monk from Brittany, fleeing persecution in his hometown of Vannes sought refuge in one of the natural caves near the settlement of Ascum Bas.Although he lived the simple and secluded life of a hermit, Saint Emilion allegedly performed several miracles from his Aquitaine hideaway. Soon, his renown spread far beyond the town and region, bringing pilgrims and disciples from far afield to visit him. The small settlement grew fast as it became a religious center.

After Saint Emilion died, his followers made sure he would be remembered by giving the town of Ascum Bas the new name Saint Emilion.Much later, monks developed more intensive and widespread vineyards. This is when the reputation for Saint Emilion wines started building towards what it is today. The rich Merlot-based blends of these fertile plains have given local wines a great appeal, and several wines produced in chateaux near Saint Emilion have been given the highest possible awards under the French appellation wine rating system.

During one of our exclusive panoramic tours of Bordeaux there are locations that cannot be missed and your driver/guide will certainly include the following highlights: drive next to Saint Andrews Cathedral, the most majestic of all of Bordeaux's churches. Construction dates back to the 11th / 12th centuries and modifications were done in the 15th century.

Recently renovated, the Cathedral seems brand new with the vivid color of its honey-colored limestone. As you pass by,  your guide will certainly point out the Pey Berland Tower that supports the statue of Our Lady of Aquitaine.

From there, reach the historical part of Bordeaux that offers an exceptional architectural ensemble with more than 5,000 buildings that date back to the 18th century. You will certainly admire the façades that resemble those of Paris and which have given to Bordeaux one of its nicknames - the Little Paris. From there, reach the delightful square of the Old Stock Exchange, known as Place de La Bourse.

Built in the mid 1700's the square is surrounded by two buildings on each side and faces the famous Water Mirror that reflects the elegant 18th century façade. As you drive along the Garonne River Front, reach the Chartrons district where the old port warehouses used to be located. This will probably be the moment when your guide will take some time to go over the wine history of Bordeaux with you.

Finally, arrive in front of the Cité du Vin wine museum. Designed by Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, the building reminds of wine swirling into a glass. This very modern museum is composed of 19 interactive and sensorial displays that explain wine growing and winemaking around the world. The interactive tour has been designed to please both novice and wine connoisseurs and the entrance ticket includes a wine tasting on its panoramic platform.

Depart from Bordeaux and reach the Right Bank Wine Region
