Its well preserved historical city center is dotted with a great number of traditional flower decked half timbered houses located along the twisted cobbled streets.

The hallmark of Alsace Grand Crus wines is their minerality. Some of the most famous wine makers that produce these Grands Crus include Kreydenweiss, Stoeffler or Albert Seltz. We will stop in one of the local wineries for a wine tasting session of the local Grands Crus.

Visit the Fantastic Grand Cru: Frankstein

Then, move on to discover a most unique and confidential Grand Cru: Frankstein (literally ‘the stone of the French’). Divided into several sectors of the charming little town of Dambach la Ville, this Grand Cru is characterized by a complex geological substratum, combining granite on its upper parts with shelly limestone, with sandstone lower down.

Depending on availability, it will also be the moment to discover biodynamic winemaking (a form of alternative agriculture very similar to organic farming, but which includes various esoteric concepts) in wineries such as Domaine Schaeffer Woerly or Beck-Hartweg.

Try the Unique Muscats of Alsace & Taste the Local Gewurztraminer

Finally reach the southern part of the Alsace wine route near Ribeauvillé and discover emblematic Grands Crus such as Altenberg, Kanzlerberg, Osterbrg. It is in this part of the wine region that you will discover local Muscat. Alsace Muscat is distinguished from the sweet Muscats of the South of France by its dry character.

Extremely aromatic, it expresses wonderful flavors of fresh fruit. We will also have you taste some exceptional Gewürztraminers that originate from local Grand Crus. These are full-bodied wine, with solid structure and a round fullness. In tasting these wines, one rediscovers the complete aromatic palette, often with the addition of licorice.

Harvested very ripe, “late harvest” and “Selection de Grains Nobles” Gewurztraminer ranging from sweet to viscous, possess exceptional richness and extraordinary aromatic complexity.

Return to Strasbourg after the final tasting.

Private Sightseeing Excursion through the Alsace region

This highly recommended full day tour has been carefully designed for travelers that wish to get the most out of their stay here in Alsace. The Pearls of Alsace tour combines what we believe are the most essential visits that one must make while in the region. It includes the visits of towns, monuments, small traditional villages and historical landmarks.

In the morning we will come and pick you up at your centrally located accommodation in Strasbourg. Meet your English speaking driver/guide who will go over the program and itinerary of the day with you. Then board your air conditioned vehicle and depart for a full day tour that includes the highlights of the Alsace region.

Discover exquisite Colmar

First, make your way to the beautiful town of Colmar. Upon arrival, follow your guide on a walking tour of one of the most beautiful small towns of France. Discover the charm of the old town, its prestigious monuments, the Pfister house, the Koïfhus, Saint Martin collegiate church, and the picturesque neighborhoods of small Venice or of the tanners.

Visit Eguisheim village

Then depart for the most beautiful village of Eguisheim, located on the Alsace wine route.  Surrounded by vineyards, the narrow and concentric streets highlight the architectural merits of its half-timbered houses, lovingly decorated with flowers. After a walk in the village your tour then continues on to the beautiful town of Riquewihr.

Visit Riquewihr and time for lunch

Surrounded by ramparts, the village has been very fortunate to survive war and destruction. Its tiny streets, fortified walls and old houses have preserved their 16C splendor virtually intact, making for remarkable architectural harmony. Free time for personal discovery and lunch.

Enjoy great Panoramic Views along the Alsace Wine Route

Located between the Rhine valley and the Vosges mountain range, the 60 year old route winds across the slopes for more than 170 kms. The itinerary leads across rows of undulating, vine covered hills, and through quaint villages with narrow streets and charming flower decked houses clustered around the local church steeple.

Visit the Mighty Castle of Haut Koenigsbourg

Finally, reach Haut Koenigsbourg castle. Here, follow your excellent guide for a tour of this mighty fortress that overlooks the valley. Built in the 12th century, the Castle occupied a strategic position controlling the wine and wheat routes to the North and the salt route that came from the East. After the visit, return to Strasbourg.

Please note that as this is a private tour, it is possible for your guide to organize a wine tasting session during the day if you would like to taste some of the local Alsace white wines.

The Black Forest & the Schwartzwald Hochstrasse

The Black Forest is a wooded mountain range bordered by the Rhine valley to the west and south. The highest peak is the Feldberg with an elevation of 1,493 meters (4,898 feet). The name Black Forest comes from the general dark color of the numerous pine trees that grow in this region.

Black Forest gateau and cuckoo clocks originate from this region. The Black Forest Route (Schwartzwald Hochstrasse) is the oldest, and one of the best known, themed drives in Germany. A long time ago this road was used to transport logs. Today, it is one of the most popular routes for tourists because of the beauty of its scenery, landscape, traditional villages and the breathtaking views of the mountains.

The Badische Winestrasse

The Baden wine route stretches for 160 kilometers along the western edge of the Black Forest, from Baden-Baden in the north to Weil am Rhein in the south, and in an additional loop around the areas of Kaiserstuhl and  Tuniberg.

The vineyard covers 15,500 hectares making it the 3rd largest in Germany. In Baden, red and white wines of great repute flourish. The Blaue Spätburgunder dominates in the category of red wines, while in the category of white wines it is the Müller-Thurgau.

With regard to the other varieties, each winegrower typically specializes in the regional wine: the Riesling is mostly at home in Ortenau, the Markgräflerland is the land of Gutedel and Burgunder-wines like the Ruländer (Pinot gris) and Weißburgunder (Pinot blanc) are mainly cultivated in Breisgau, Kaiserstuhl or Tuniberg.

Petite France & Cathedral: Private Walking Tour of Strasbourg

Explore the History & Beauty of Strasbourg with an Expert local licensed Guide on this private guided walking tour of Strasbourg. Avoid the free walking tours of Strasbourg and visit this city with an official guide including the Cathedral!

Follow a certified tour guide in the Grande Ile, a Unesco World Heritage site, around the old pedestrian areas, the Cathedral and the Petite France neighborhood. The tour includes major landmarks such as Maison Kammerzell, Gutenberg square, St. Thomas church, the former tanners’ houses, the Covered Bridge and many more.

Pick up by your guide at your centrally located Hotel

For this private walking tour of the beautiful city of Strasbourg, your guide will come and pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in central Strasbourg. If you are not based in Strasbourg and are coming from outside, we will suggest a convenient meeting point where to meet your guide.

The Cathedral

Begin your private 2-hour walk in Strasbourg. The old city centers around its Gothic cathedral, Our Lady of Strasbourg, built of red sandstone and described by Victor Hugo as a “gigantic and delicate marvel”! Follow your expert guide for the Cathedral* visit including the marvelous façade that provides one of the finest picture books of the Middle Ages that you will ever see.

The hundreds of sculptures which almost seem to leap out at you from the wall make great use of light and shadow effects. Another major attraction that your guide will comment on are the stained-glass windows dating from the 12th and 14th centuries and that form a particularly enchanting sight along with the rose window.

Finally, the highlight of the visit to the Cathedral of Notre Dame is the amazing Renaissance astronomical clock. Built in 1843 it features an orrery, a rotating display of the sun and moon, a planetary calendar, and even a mechanical rooster. Each day at around 12:30, the bird crows and a conga line of apostles issues forth from the clockworks, led by a little Christ.

* Please note that the audio headset rental that is compulsory to visit the Cathedral is included in the price.

The Old Town & La Petite France district

After the visit of the Cathedral, reach the Petite France district. Historically, this was the poor section of the city occupied by mills and tanneries, both of which depended on the river and its downward flowing branches to support their work.

Today, the neighborhood is one of the most charming of Strasbourg with its colorful 16th and 17th century half-timbered houses such as the ‘Maison des Tanneurs’ that your guide will certainly point out.

Your private guided tour in this charming area will lead you to our final stop: a series of fortified bridges and their three towers. This succession of three bridges linking arms with the Ill River is dominated by three 14th century towers, remains of the ancient medieval ramparts, which totalized 90 towers. The bridges themselves were once capped by a wooden roof.

Of course Strasbourg offers so much more including the visit of the German district, the visit of the European Parliament or the different Museums located in the Palais Rohan. Since this is a private tour don't hesitate to reach out to our team of travel advisors if there is a highlight of Strasbourg that you would like to include on this tour.

The city is renowned for its well preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks and its museums, among which is the Unterlinden Museum with the Isenheim Altarpiece. Colmar is also one of the gateways to the Alsace Wine Route.

Colmar the capital of the Haut Rhin offers a great deal of unique attractions and activities. The small town of Colmar is one of the most exquisite of France with its historic center, grand rue, quai de la poissonnerie, st martin's church, medieval half timbered houses such as the “maison des tetes” and small winding canals. The town also houses one of the most impressive 16th century painting – the Issenheim Altarpiece - that is located in the Unterlinden Museum.

Other significant landmarks include:

The Koifhus: This is the Old customs building strategically located at the crossroads of the Grand'Rue and the rue des Marchands. The building dates back to the early 15th century and was used as the meeting place of the deputies of the Décapole which was the federation of the 10 imperial cities of Alsace.

The Pfister House: This is the first example of Renaissance architecture in Colmar. From the outside the building still retains some medieval features but its storey corner oriel, its galleries, its octagonal turret and its mural paintings are perfect examples of the changes that were taking place in those days. The Alsace Grand Cru appellation represents the pinnacle of quality, with limited terroirs, low yields, and specific vineyard practices ensuring expressive and authentic wines. These extraordinary vineyards range in size from 3 to 80 hectares. Our thoughtfully crafted full-day wine tour offers you the privilege of tasting some of the finest Alsace white wines. The journey begins in the Ribeauvillé wine-producing region, where you'll savor fabulous Rieslings from the Kirchberg, Geisberg, and Osterberg Grands Crus, known for their mineral character. Ribeauvillé wines often boast higher mineral content compared to other Grand Cru Rieslings, reaching up to 2.5 g solids per liter. Notable wine producers such as Trimbach or Louis Sipp contribute to the excellence of these Grands Crus.

Next, we'll venture to the unique and lesser-known Kaefferkopf Grand Cru, nestled in the charming town of Ammerschwihr. This Grand Cru stands out with its complex geological composition, blending granite, shelly limestone, and sandstone. Depending on availability, we may also explore biodynamic winemaking at renowned wineries like Domaine de Weinbach or Domaine JB Adam, offering a glimpse into alternative agriculture practices.

In the southern part of the Alsace wine route, you'll discover emblematic Grands Crus such as Steinart, Goldert, and Hatschbourg. Delight in the local Muscat, characterized by its dry and highly aromatic profile, showcasing refreshing fruit flavors.

WWII Alsace Memorial Sights Private Tour : A Solemn Tribute

A WWII historical insight in a long-disputed region on this full day small group private day trip from Colmar. Visit the brand new Alsace Moselle WWII Memorial Museum and the Struthof concentration camp.

Explore the Historical Legacy: Full-Day Tour from Colmar

Embark on an insightful journey through history as you discover the compelling highlights of the Alsace region on this full-day tour. Your morning begins with a convenient pickup from your centrally located accommodation in Colmar, where you will meet your knowledgeable English-speaking driver/guide. Together, you will review the program and itinerary for the day before boarding your premium air-conditioned vehicle.

Visit the Alsace-Moselle WWII Memorial Museum

Delve into the intricate history of Alsace and Moselle, particularly during the tumultuous period of the Second World War, at the Alsace-Moselle Memorial. This memorial stands as a testament to the collective efforts of the region, aiming to shed light on the complex experiences endured during the Nazi occupation. From 1940 to 1945, Alsace and Moselle faced the harsh reality of being the only French territories annexed by the Third Reich, enduring the brutalities of a totalitarian regime.

To truly comprehend the agony, it is essential to trace the historical footsteps of a region fiercely contested by France and Germany. The enduring struggle has shaped the culture and heritage of Alsace and Moselle, enriching their identity. The memorial provides a comprehensive history lesson accessible to all, emphasizing the importance of European unity, diversity, and the utmost respect and dignity for every individual in the pursuit of peace and freedom.

Reach the Natzweiler-Struthof Concentration Camp

Journey to the Natzweiler-Struthof concentration camp, situated near the village of Struthof. As the only concentration camp in France during the Nazi occupation, it holds profound historical significance. The central camp, located in the annexed Alsace region, was part of a network of approximately 70 camps spread across both sides of the Rhine.

Within the KL-Natzwiller complex, nearly 52,000 detainees were held, with around 35,000 not passing through the central camp. Serving as a labor camp supporting the Nazi war industry, it also became a site for horrific medical experiments conducted by professors from the Reich University of Strasbourg.

On November 23, 1944, the Allies discovered the evacuated camp, as the Nazis had fled in September. Tragically, some deportees from the camp's annexes suffered through the "Death Marches" in the spring of 1945. Throughout its existence from 1941 to 1945, KL-Natzwiller stood as one of the most deadly camps within the Nazi system, claiming the lives of nearly 22,000 deportees.

Conclude Your Tour and Return to Colmar

After this poignant exploration of history, your tour concludes, and you will be transported back to Colmar. Reflect upon the profound lessons learned from the past, carrying with you a deep appreciation for the importance of remembrance and preserving the values of peace and humanity.

Would you like to discover the famous Issenheim Altarpiece and all it's secrets in total privacy? Then participate in our unique 'Out-of-Hours' Private tour guided by an expert of the Museum and admire Grünewald's Masterpiece with serenity.

We open the Unterlinden Museum just for you

Visit the Untelinden Museum of Colmar, off-hours, with your personal guide. Before being a museum, Unterlinden was a Monastery founded by two noblewomen, Agnès of Mittelnheim and Agnès of Hergheim in a district know as Sub Tilia which means under the linden trees or Unter(den)linden in German. In the 13th and 14th century, the Monsatery was marked by an intense spiritual and economic development. During the French Revolution, the nuns left the convent that became the property of the City of Colmar. The building was transformed into a museum in the mid 19th century and was then extended with a contemporary new building that perfectly integrates with the medieval architecture.

A special visit of the Issenheim Altarpiece

Certainly the most exceptional work of Art this is housed in the Museum is the Issenheim Altarpiece that was created by Niclaus of Hageunau (for the sculpted part) and Matthias Grünewald for the painted panels. The polypthic dates back to the early 1500's and was made for the wealthy Antonite order. Its seven panels of lime wood and ten sculptures illustrate several episodes from the lives of Christ and Saint Anthony the Hermit, partron saint of the Community. As presented today, the altarpiece is incomplete as the sculpted structure that crowned the work was lost during the French Revolution.

Admire the altarpiece in its different positions that will be explained by your personal expert guide of the museum. Closed, the altarpiece displays a terrifying Crucifixion, on the first opening reveals luminous panels of the Annunciation, the Concert of Angels, the Nativity and the Resurrection. The second opening of the Altarpiece, that is when it is fully opened, reveals a majestic sculpture of Saint Anthony sitting on throne. The Alterpiece has undergone a long restauration work and your guide will also explain all the secrets linked to these renovation works.
