Reach the Pic Saint Loup Wine Region

20km north of Montpellier, the Pic Saint-Loup and Hortus Causse form a picturesque and geologically surprising landscape that has become a favourite for hiking around Montpellier. Located between the Mediterranean and the Cevennes, this legendary valley is home to one of the most interesting Languedoc terroirs.

Visit and Wine Tasting in two Wineries

Your small group half day languedoc wine tour includes the visit of two wineries. During the winery tours, experience commented wine tasting sessions so as to better understand the types of wines that are made in the area. During the visits, you'll learn all about wine, from the working of the vines to vinification and aging.

You will also learn about the type of grape varieties that are used and be introduced to the notion of Biodynamic wine making. A large majority of wineries of the area have also decided to produce only organic wines.

More information about Pic Saint Loup Vineyard

The Pic Saint-Loup wine growing region extends from the first Cévennes foothills in the Garrigues area north of Montpellier and about 30 kms from the Mediterranean coast. Anchored in a landscape shaped by the natural and legendary sculptures of Pic Saint Loup and Causse de l'Hortus, this little piece of Languedoc has all the advantages of a great terroir.

The main grape varieties that are used here include Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre that are common grapes used in the Languedoc wine producing region. Originally Grenache used to be the main grape but today Syrah has replaced it. This particular grape variety has found its terroir of predilection in Pic Saint Loup.

The wines of Pic Saint Loup include red and rosé wines. 90% of the production is red wine that benefits from the aromatic freshness of the garrigue, with notes of thyme, bay leaves, rosemary, cade, menthol, associated with aromas of red and black berries. The finesse of the tannins and the freshness offer balanced and elegant wines.

The Languedoc wine region

Enjoy a fun & informative Languedoc Wine Tour in France's largest wine region. For many years, the Languedoc wines were mostly synonymous to quantity rather than quality. With time, customers frowned upon low quality wines and this huge French wine region had to rethink its business model.

For 30 years now, the great majority of wine growers have made a considerable effort to restructure the vineyards in order to increase the quality and authenticity of the local wines and take into consideration the will of more demanding customers.

The Languedoc AOC regional appellation was created in 2007 and it helped redefine the quality of all the appellations within a regional framework. Among these AOC's the Crus du Languedoc include the greatest appellations of which the Terrasses du Larzac and Pic Saint Loup wine producing regions.

Gourmet Food & Wine Tour from Montpellier to savor oysters & wines. Enjoy a small group shared tour that includes oyster tasting on the Bay of Thau followed by a Languedoc wine tour. Taste delicious red & white Languedoc wines.

In a typically Mediterranean landscape, wander around the lagoon and visit the vineyards of Picpoul de Pinet and Grès de Montpellier. We will then taste some fresh oysters of the Thau lagoon.

Meet your English speaking local guide guide

Meet your guide who will go over the itinerary and program of this small group half day languedoc wine & food tour with you. Then board your premium A/C vehicle and begin to make your way to the Thau lagoon for your oyster tour & tasting session.

Etang de Thau

The "oyster of Bouzigues", with its marbled shell, very serrated, and its iodized freshness enhanced with a hint of hazelnut, is a delight for the palate. After a short drive, we will reach the lagoon side, direction Mèze, Bouzigues or Marseillan, where a plate of oysters awaits, before an iodized visit of the oyster beds.

The absence of tides in the Mediterranean has imposed specific techniques: suspended farming using "tables" made up of rails supporting cross-beams and poles. Learn about this little known production and enjoy oysters that may still be in the water at the beginning of your visit.

Picpoul de Pinet Wine

The AOC Languedoc Picpoul de Pinet vineyards cover some 1400 hectares (3000 acres) around the Thau lagoon to the west of the Mediterranean Golfe de Lyon. It forms a triangle bounded by Agde, Pézenas and Sète and is the largest white wine producing area of the Languedoc. One of the oldest Languedoc grapes, the famous Picpoul de Pinet has been growing near the Thau Lagoon for centuries.

White is the most common, though both blush and black grapes are to be found. Picpoul de Pinet is not only splendid with seafood and shellfish as well as other traditional Mediterranean dishes, but also with cheese and chocolate. It’s best drunk young and cool.

The Montpellier Follies

All around Montpellier, between the 17th and 19th centuries, investors of the time built large domaines, hoping to make their fortunes through wine-making. Hence beautiful residences , some inspired by Venetian villas, came into being. They became known as « follies ». Two of them still remain, headed up by wine-makers of the Grés de Montpellier Languedoc Roussillon appellation.

Begin your wine tour and visit a magnificent wine estate, its Renaissance-style castle backed by its 11th century chapel and nestled in a lush garden. You will also visit the vinification cellar and the oak barrel cellar before tasting their range of white, red and rosé wines. After the visit & wine tasting session we will return to Montpellier and that will be the end of this half day tour.
